TRYAVNA

The town of Tryavna is situated on the north flank of Stara Planina Mountain/the Balkan range/ at the altitude of 440 m. The town is in the middle of the distance from Sofia to Varna /250 km./. It lies on the railway line connecting north and south Bulgaria. It is supplied with a good transport link connecting it with Sofia and Gabrovo.
   The spiritual grandness of a nation is commensurable not with the great words and promises it gives but with what it leaves behind in terms of culture.
    Marvelous architectural ensembles, arc bridges and houses built in an organic complementation of stone and wood, handsome wood-carved ceilings and church sanctuaries, unique frescoes and icons in the cloisters, alive museums under the open sky tucked in the recesses of the mountain, all these art as precious treasure preserved during the ages by the inhabitants of this Bulgarian region.
   Once visiting this area the tourist will be immersed in the atmosphere of the Bulgarian Enlightenment epoch.
   In this area each old house has its own history and soul. The cobblestone streets of Tryavna can take you to the old square with the town clock tower slowly ticking away the centuries and the wood-carved ceilings of houses will kindle your heart with the shine of the exquisitely wood-cut suns.
   The large awnings of the white houses of the village of Bozhentsi, huddled behind massive porches still whisper legends of the times immemorial.
   The bazaar of the town of Etara is brought to live with the skilful hands of masters of crafts creating beauty.
   The great number of museums preserves the history of the Balkan, full of times of despondency and glory.
   For several centuries on end the mountain has echoed the bells of the Troyan Monastery, the third in its greatness monastery in Bulgaria, and the frescoes painted by Zahari Zograf, an artist from the period of Enlightenment, stir astonishment and admiration at the talent of the artist.
   The monastery of Glozhen towers high up the rocks of the town of Teteven and even today it keeps a vigilant eye and calls down its clapper blessings on the whole neighborhood.
   The talent of the masters of the Enlightenment period - builders, wood-carvers, icon-painters and ceramists comes back to life in their works of art created with love in the hands of their successors – the new junior masters graduating the art schools of Tryavna and Troyan.
   The masterpieces created by the hands of the distinctive national genius are countless. One has to touch them and feel the spirit of the Bulgarian tradition and life embodied in them.
   Tryavna offers good opportunities for a whole-year-round recreational tourism and sports activities.
   The mountain welcomes tourists and guests with its crystal clear air, immersed with the aroma of forest herbs, the breath of meadows sprinkled with the morning dew-drops, the green coolness of the centuries old forests and the grand towering peaks.
   The mountain slopes art the natural decor giving the town a touch of the preferred mountain resort with its healing climate.
   717 sq. m. away from its most picturesque part there is the Central Balkan National Park.
   Its nine reserves - Boatin, Tsarichina, Kozya Stena/the Goat’s wall/, Steneto, Stara Reka/the Old river/, Dzhendema, Severen Dzhendem/the North Dzhendem/, Peeshti Skali/the Singing Rocks/ and Sokolna - keep the unique natural resources of the Balkan range.
   The century old forests of beech-trees, fir-trees and white fir live hand in hand with plants one can see nowhere else all over the world. Among them there are the Alpine rose and the shy edelweiss.
   The park is one of the last preserved habitats in the world, a home of brown bears, wolfs and wild goats.
   The Central Balkan National Park together with eight of its reserves comes under the United Nations List of the Protected Territories which in itself is an international recognition of their high natural value.
   Far away from the noise and vanity, one can indulge himself in the opulence of tints, tranquility and peacefulness, delight in the bird songs, forest scent and grass whispering.
   The settlements in the region huddled under the cool shade of the mountain tops, are picturesquely arranged along the valleys of crystal clear rivers.
   In the silvery brooks one can discern the phosphorescence of the barbell, the fresh water fish and the trout which art an allure for the keen anglers and the river pools fill you with freshness and delight in the hot days.
   Winter in the mountain is like a fairy tale. The snow tenderly covers the forests, the meadows and the pinnacles. Everything is silent and it seems you fly away into another unknown world, a world of purity and white innocence.
   The snow-covered mountain welcomes kindly the admirers and winter sports amateurs to experience the winter mellow tiredness and enjoy the mountain slopes.
