| SOZOPOL |
The town of Sozopol is situated in the northeastern part of Burgas region. The municipality of the town of Sozopol occupies an area of 784 357 decares. To the north it borders with the municipality of Burgas, to the west with the municipality of Sredets, to the east with the Black sea and to the south with the municipality of Tsarevo and Malko Tarnovo. Sozopol is one of the oldest Bulgarian towns. It is one of the first towns on the Bulgarian Black seacoast dating back to the year 2610 when the Greek settlers from Asia Minor populated the area. On the ruins from the Thracian settlement was erected Apolonia, the so-called town-country, setting the pattern for the ancient Greek democracy. The town was named after the God Apolon- the patron of arts. Apolonia was the largest and richest town on the Black seacoast and thrived as a center of brisk commerce and arts. Extremely lots of archeological finds – such as coins, ceramic amphoras, craters, antique anchors – keeping the history of the old times, have been preserved. In the year 812 Khan Krum, one of the first and greatest Bulgarian rulers, in his fights with the Byzantium conquered the city and annexed it within the borders of Bulgaria. Sozopol has grown into the main Bulgarian port on the Black seacoast. During the Middle Ages around the town several monasteries were built, among them the so-called Sveti Ivan /St.John/ lying on the island which bears the same name and is adjacent to the town. The closeness of the town to Burgas, which is an administrative and industrial center of the southeastern Bulgaria as well as an important and promising transport center along the axe – Black sea – the Adriatic – representing a part of the European transport network, combined with the opportunities for tourism, recreation and sport contributes to more active implementation of investment proposals and developing of new types of production. The town attracts special attention in the 30s and 40s when it gradually takes up its image of a tourist and resort center. One of the regular visitors from all across Bulgaria are the people of arts i.e. artists, musicians, men of letters and poets. Actors and architects are inspired and amazed by the beauty and the unique atmosphere of the town of Sozopol. Nowadays Sozopol is one of the tourist centers of the country, blending the antiquity and modern times for which contributes its architectural composition of the old and new town. It attracts a lot of tourists from Great Britain, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Check Republic and France. Its artistic image combined with the cultural monuments and events makes it one of the most preferred and favored tourist destinations. Another tempting peculiarity about the town of Sozopol is the fact the visitors of the south Black seacoast can seize the opportunity to attend the greatest cultural occasion in Bulgaria in the end of August i.e. Apolonia Arts Festival. In 1984 the town of Sozopol hosted the first Apolonia Arts Festival. The town of Sozopol is one of the oldest Bulgarian towns. The people of art i.e. artists, musicians, men of letters and poets, actors and architects are inspired by the beauty and unique town atmosphere. From 1st to 10th September the town is revived by a number of tourists who can not only seize the wonderful opportunities to have a great holiday but can also be attracted by the famous artistic names on the festival poster. Each evening one can watch a theatre performance, hear the jazz or chamber concert, see the literary recitals at the accompaniment of music or see the open-air ballet performance. During the festival in the art gallery of the Old town of Sozopol one can see the exhibitions and artistry performance classes in different art areas – singing, piano playing, jazz improvisations, theatre schools and many others.
