 The town of Bourgas is the second district centre on the Black Sea.
It is 390 km east of Sofia. The town is located in the most western part of the Bourgas bay on a peninsula, surrounded by 3 lakes – Bourgasko Lake, Atanasovsko Lake and Mandrensko Lake.
The climate is favourable for rehabilitation – mild winter and long sunny summer. The beach of Bourgas is famous for its dark black sands, which have special curative effect.
Bourgas is the fourth largest town in the country after Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna.
Bourgas is the successor of the small Roman town Deultum, which was a military colony. The settlement was renamed to Develt, from which comes the modern name of the village of Debelt. Later on a rehabilitation centre was built here close to the numerous mineral springs in this region. The first population, however, were the Thracians.
In the Middle Ages the fortress of Pirgos was built here; probably it was used as a watch tower.
Bourgas received its present name as early as the 17th century. Initially it was called Anhelo Bourgas, and after the Liberation – Bourgas. At that time it was a small town, but it grew and turned into a centre for the South Black Sea coast, a city of developed industry and trade.
Bourgas has a beautiful Sea garden, full of many flower beds, trees and sculptures.
The cathedral “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” seems to be of special interest with its frescoes and wooden altar. Also interesting are the Armenian church, the Catholic cathedral, the “St. Virgin Mary” church and the “St. Ivan Rilski” church.
The Philharmonic orchestra, the Opera and the Drama theatre are located in three separate buildings and work all season long. Together with the Puppet theatre they outline the cultural life of the town.

The fastest way to travel to Bourgas is by plane. The flight to Sofia takes 40 minutes.

Trains to all destinations of the country leave from the railway station in Bourgas. It is recommendable to book a sleeping car a week in advance.
The bus station is located in immediate proximity to the railway station in the city. There are regular coach lines to all destinations in the country.
Pomoriysko Lake is 20 km north of Bourgas and is surrounded by salterns and balneological and the town of Pomorie.
Atanasovsko Lake is also located north of the city. It is the home of many wading and sea birds migrating from Gibraltar and the Bosphorus.
Pelicans, ibises and herons nest in Burgasko Lake.
Mandrensko Lake is located 10 km south of Bourgas and is an important bird sanctuary.
The island St. Anastasia is located 3 nautical miles from the city, and has an ancient church preserved on it.
The salterns in Bourgas are also very interesting; they border Bourgasko Lake, and some of them even stretch as far as Atanasovsko Lake.
The mineral springs 13 km northwest in the direction of the town of Aytos. There are remains from an ancient Roman settlement there.
The village of Kraymorie is south of Bourgas on the road to the old fortress Pirgos.
The Otmanli park is located 15 km of the city, near the Chokaliya promontory.
The city is developing very dynamically, offering its citizens many new opportunities for personal realization. It is the object of extraordinary interest for a number of investors of world importance.
