Recently voted Europe's most improved ski resort by the Great Skiing and Snowboarding Guide 2006, Bulgaria’s premier ski resort, Bansko provides a perfect climate for a long ski season lasting from December through to April. Newly installed state of the art skiing facilities including a multi million euro 8 person gondola lift, service the 65km of piste, a figure which is due to be vastly increased in the next couple of years. Investment in the infrastructure has been vast including the building of a vastly improved highway linking the ski resort with Sofia which has dramatically cut transfer times and the creation of a new ski resort village which separates the new modern apart hotels from the traditional old town which retains its unique atmosphere. The ski season is complemented by the alpine summer, which offers attractive hiking trials, mountain biking and lake fishing in areas of outstanding natural beauty and historic interests. The addition of an Ian Woosnam signature, 18 Hole championship golf course and a centre of golfing excellence will offer tourists additional facilities throughout the summer months and raise the areas profile as a year round tourist destination. Bansko old town is much admired for its 16th century architecture, old churches and cobbled streets set between the Pirin and Rila mountains. Many mehanas (traditional restaurants) and local bars have sprung up amongst the traditional houses to cater for the ever growing tourist population. All of this tourism has resulted in a continuing huge demand for high quality, low priced apartments. Despite annual price increases of up to 25% property prices remain low when compared to similar standard resorts in the more developed countries of Europe.
